Background: Nigeria

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. It is a two-part country: the predominantly Christian south of the country is opposed to the north, which is dominated by Islam. From 1999 the strictly Islamic Sharia law was introduced in all 12 northern states of Nigeria. In addition, there are Islamist terrorist organizations such as the Boko Haram and the Fulani militias, which carry out targeted attacks on Christians and Christian villages. Thousands of Christians have already been murdered and hundreds of thousands have had to flee. At the moment there is no end in sight to the violence. Nigeria needs our prayers and the good news of Jesus Christ.

Call of Hope’s work in Nigeria

Missionary work in the Sharia states of northern Nigeria is associated with special challenges. Life for Christians is very dangerous here. They constantly have to reckon with attacks and attacks on the part of the Islamists. Nevertheless, the work in northern Nigeria is an important focus for Call of Hope. It is precisely in the midst of these difficult circumstances that our local workers want to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the Muslims. It is also important to us to support Christians affected by terrorism in their need with practical and spiritual help.

The work of Call of Hope in Nigeria

Call of Hope tries to reach the Muslims in northern Nigeria with the message of Jesus Christ in different ways. In word and deed, people should experience that God loves them. In addition, we try to help Christians affected by terrorism. This is done, among other things, by:

  • Evangelistic radio broadcasts
  • Dissemination of evangelistic literature
  • Humanitarian aid and medical operations in rural areas
  • Well drilling
  • The goat project
  • Seminars and training courses
  • Training and funding of peasant evangelists
  • Church planting
  • Reconstruction aid for destroyed Christian villages
  • Support for refugees in refugee camps
